Professor of General and Colorectal Surgery, Medical School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)

George Theodoropoulos graduated National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) in 1992. His PhD research was in Gastrointestinal Malignancies Tumor Markers. He completed a 6-year residency program in General Surgery and an accredited clinical fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery in USA. He has also completed a 6-month research fellowship in the Department of Colorectal Surgery, Cleveland Clinic Florida, Weston, FL, USA. He is currently holding an academic post as Professor of General and Colorectal Surgery at NKUA. He is a Diplomat and a Fellow (FACS) of the American Board of Surgery and of the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery (FASCRS). As an Academic Colorectal Surgeon, he has set up and coordinated a dedicated clinic for the Health-Related Quality of Life surveillance of colorectal cancer patients and has been supervising the Colorectal Unit of the First Department of Propaedeutic Surgery of NKUA. For two decades, continuously holding an Academic post at NKUA, he has been actively involved in the pre- and post-graduate education and has either participated or organized seminars and workshops focused on lower gastrointestinal and minimally invasive surgery.

Apart from Professor of Surgery, he was declared as Professor of General and Colorectal Surgery by NKUA at 2025, being the first in Greece acquiring this Academic title. Principal endeavors are the undertaking of the directorship of his Academic Department’s Postgraduate MSc Program, entitled “Minimally Invasive Techniques at Digestive Surgery”, and the coordination of the first NKUA accredited Colorectal Fellowship.

He has performed about 5,000 general and colorectal surgery procedures. He applies a variety of minimally invasive techniques and he is skilled at laparoscopic colorectal procedures for cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as management of common and complex anorectal pathologies.

He acquires presentations in more than 200 meetings and has been invited speaker for 150 talks in congresses and workshops. He is the author/co-author of 180 international cited peer-reviewed journals publications with about 9,000 citations and h-index: 47. He is the editor of three Greek and two English books. He has been the President (2023-2024) and currently the Vice-President of the Greek Society of Coloproctology. He has served as a member of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) Research Committee. He is currently member of the International Committee and the Cancer Committee of the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS). He represents Greece as one of the Managing Committee members of three European COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) platforms. In 2025 he was elected as Associate Member of the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.
