Dimitris Vartzopoulos
Deputy Minister of Health
Dimitris Vartzopoulos was born on 11/11/1957, the son of Chrysostomos, a craftsman and Fanis Lichiridas, a philologist from Asvestochori, Thessaloniki. He is married to Fotini Mavromatis, RN and has three children, Alexandros, a lawyer, Chrysostomos, a student and Danae, a student too. He graduated with Honours (19 9/10) from the 2nd High School for Boys of Kavala, was the first to enter the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1975, was a scholarship holder of the ICF throughout his studies and graduated with Honours (9) in 1981. He specialised in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Clinics of Bonn and Cologne and was awarded a PHD by the University of Bonn in 1990. He was a Scientific Associate of University Clinics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for many years. He worked and still works as a private Psychiatrist and Scientific Manager of a private Psychiatric Clinic. He speaks German, English and a little French.
He was involved in student trade unionism, DAP-NDFK, ONNED and assumed positions of responsibility at all levels of New Democracy organizations (President of the Local, President of the Prefectural, President of the Thessaloniki Administrative Council, Deputy Secretary of Political Planning). In the Public Administration he served as the Governor of the Health Region of Macedonia from 2004 to 2009.
He also served as Deputy Minister of Health and Social Solidarity in the Papademos Government in 2011/2012. In 2012 he was called by Antonis Samaras to establish the General Secretariat for Government Coordination, which he headed for about 2. 5 years!
In the parliamentary elections of July 2019, he is elected MP for the first time.
In the elections of May 2023 he was re-elected as the first Member of Parliament in the 2nd Constituency of Thessaloniki.
After the June elections, the Prime Minister and President of the New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis appointed him as Deputy Minister of Health.
