Prof. Dr. Ioannis Gitas

Director of the Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Prof. Dr. Ioannis Gitas is Director of the Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. A fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society and Hellenic Agricultural Academy, he holds a PhD and MPhil from the University of Cambridge and a BSc from AUTh.

His research focuses on remote sensing and GIS for environmental monitoring, specializing in forest fires, land cover mapping, and change detection. With 25+ years of experience, he has consulted for national and international organizations and authored over 230 peer-reviewed publications. He reviews research proposals for major funding bodies.

Dr. Gitas serves as Editor, Associate Editor, and Editorial Board Member in different scientific journals. He has organized international conferences and edited high-impact journal special issues.

Former Chair of EARSeL’s Forest Fire group and of the University Forest Administration and Management Fund, he now represents Greece in ICOS, FAO Forest Assessment, and GEO GWIS. He co-leads NASA’s MedRIN network on land-use change.
