With more than 35 years of experience in the practice of Medicine and Internal Medicine and over 20 years of experience as a Pharmaceutical Medicine Expert, Dr. Baroutsou led scientific R&D departments, where she focused on improving drug development, translational research, clinical trials and evidence of innovative treatments.
Varvara Baroutsou started her career as an academic PhD research fellow, then worked as a hospital physician & clinical researcher and subsequently took senior leadership roles in Clinical Development and Medical Groups of large pharmaceutical biotech companies (VIANEX/MSD, Abbott, Sanofi, Novartis) in Greece and Europe.
Currently, as President of the International Federation of Associations of Pharmaceutical Medicine (IFAPP), and Member of the Executive Committee of CIOMS, she collaborates with non-profit scientific organizations (WMA, PharmaTrain Federation), universities as a lecturer in Postgraduate Programs (NKUA, Democritus University, EAP, ACG-Deree Faculty Pharmaceutical Medicine), patient associations and international organizations to implement initiatives of excellence in clinical research, with patients’ collaboration according to the modern bioethics framework (Stavros Niarchos Bioethics Academy Alumni).
Her academic experience includes roles as a reviewer and editor of scientific journals, publications, scientific book chapters, teaching in postgraduate programmes in Medicine, Public Health, Biomedical Research and advisory contributions to educational, technical and regulatory standards committees. She is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Athens, a Certified Consultant, Global Fellow in Medicines Development (GFMD), with a master’s degree in health economics from the Stockholm School of Economics and a European Market Access Diploma (EMAUD) from the University of Lyon.
