8th Health Innovation Conference

“Health innovation: A catalyst for improving the National Health System”

Around the globe, healthcare systems are facing major challengescosts are constantly on the rise due to aging populations, chronic diseases are on the increase,  new, expensive treatments have been introduced, and patients have higher levels of expectations.

Many studies have shown that utilizing new technologies can not only make a decisive contribution to improving the level of service but also to keeping rising costs under control. Spearheading this development are Digitization of the healthcare system and the use of Artificial Intelligence..

However, there are major challenges internationally in this regard too: Barriers to the adoption of new but more expensive treatments and technologies in clinical practice and skepticism about their expected benefits continue to make it difficult for health systems to capitalize on innovative scientific and technological developments.

Artificial Intelligence and Health Innovation Assessment using health data were at the heart of the 8th Health Innovation Conference #hico24 entitled “Health Innovation: A catalyst for improving the National Health System” to was held on 16 May 2024  by ethosEVENTS in cooperation with the Pharma & Health Business magazine and the portal virus.com.gr. It wοuld be possible to attend the conference either in person at the Divani Caravel or online through the LiveOn Expo Complex, LiveOn’s innovative 3D exhibition and conference center, the Digital Platform for Business Communication and Events.

Closed (Hybrid) Lobbying Workshop

A closed working meeting on “Evaluating and managing innovative treatments and medical technologies” has been held as part of the 8th Health Innovation Conference. The following topics were addressed:

  • Patient access to innovative medicines and medical devices
  • Checking prescriptions for high cost medicines
  • Health Technology Assessment
  • Recovery Fund: Investments in new medical technology

The Working Meeting has been held in hybrid mode, with participants and top-ranking executives from the conference sponsors were attending in person at the hotel where the Conference was held, and others were attending online via the LiveOn Expo Complex‘s digital conference infrastructure.

Minister of Health, Vice President of Nea Demokratia, Member of Parliament of the B1 Northern Sector of Athens
Vice President & Managing Director – Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Poland & Romania, Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson

The political leadership of the Ministry of Health and representatives of all parties had been involved such as patients, the pharmaceutical industry, medical associations, pharmacists, and the competent bodies such as Greece’s National Healthcare Provider (EOPYY), the National Organization of Medicines, the Institute of Pharmaceutical Research & Technology, the National Centralized Health Procurement Authority, etc. had been invited to participate.

Mr. Emilios Negis, Journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Pharma & Health Business and virus.com.gr was chair the Closed Working Meeting.

The conference included keynote talks and panels covering the following key topics:

Panel I: “Artificial intelligence in health: prospects-obstacles-challenges”

AI is rapidly developing and is expected to have a major impact on everyone’s lives in the near future. In the health sector in particular, it is expected to have a decisive impact in four areas: clinical practice, biomedical research, public health and health management.

It is already being applied in various fields of biology and medicine such as:

  • omics technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics)
  • diagnostic radiology
  • precision medicine
  • supporting clinical trials
  • decision-making and health policy-making

A recent report from the National Bioethics and Technoethics Committee entitled “Artificial intelligence in health” showed that in Greece there are a large number of research programs relating to the use of AI, while applications at clinical level remain limited.
Experts believe that it can transform the health sector with its applications covering the entire range of biomedicine. However, applying AI to health entails major challenges:
Although AI systems promise greater effectiveness in the provision of medical care, there is a fear that they may eventually undermine the quality of healthcare services provided, to the extent that they involve less personal contact between the physician and patient.

More generally, the development of AI applications in healthcare services faces issues on two main levels:
a) how to manage a critical volume of data that will allow suitable algorithms to be developed to support either clinical or research applications and b) ensuring application security so that attendant doctors, healthcare staff and –above all– patients or end users of healthcare services in general, will trust it.

Section 1: Innovations and best practices in the Greek NHS

Section 2: New diagnostic and treatment methods changing the health landscape

Panel 2 “Recent developments in the treatment of diabetes and obesity”

Over recent years, there has been a surge in developments in the treatment of diabetes and obesity, culminating in the uproar caused internationally by the release of medicines which lead to weight loss, meaning that companies cannot meet global demand.

Diabetes mellitus, and in particular type 2 diabetes (DM 2) which affects 90% of all diabetics, is a major global health problem with an ever-increasing prevalence. Among the reasons for the epidemiological dimensions of DM 2 worldwide, obesity is the most important factor.
Although the contribution of body weight to the appearance of DM 2 has been documented, the pathological correlation of these two diseases has not been fully clarified. Insulin resistance in both conditions may be the main link between obesity and diabetes.

The term “insulin resistance” indicates a condition in which normal hormone concentrations show a reduction in the expected biological response. Insulin resistance and the hyperinsulinemia it causes are the metabolic disorder that precedes the onset of DM 2, while in non-diabetic people they are associated with an increase in BMI and with abdominal obesity.
On the other hand, there are clear indications that effective treatment of obesity is the cornerstone both for preventing or slowing down the onset of DM 2 and for good regulation and above all a reduction in cardiovascular risk when DM 2 is identified.

  • Studies have shown that only 11% of people with impaired glucose tolerance who were put on a weight loss diet coupled with increased physical activity, losing 6 kilos in the first year and maintaining a loss of 2-3 kilos in the next 5 years presented DM 2, compared to 29% in the corresponding control group, which did not show any substantive weight loss in the 5-year period.
  • Moreover, in women who lost more than 5 kg over a period of more than 10 years, the risk of developing diabetes dropped by up to 50%!

There is an indication that weight reduction medication should be prescribed to obese people with DM 2 when dietary guidelines and increased physical activity over a period of 3-6 months do not achieve the target of 5-10% body weight loss.
It has been proven that weight loss medication offers patients significant assistance in their effort to lose weight. It is recommended that it be administered to people with DM 2 and BMI over 30, or over 27 where cardiovascular risk factors are present.
