13th Clinical Research Conference

"The challenges remain"

Despite announcements the Government has made, the barriers and challenges to the development of clinical trials in Greece remain unchanged. At the same time, the environment in the pharmaceutical market continues to deteriorate, with the latest development being excessive clawbacks of up to 83% of hospital pharmaceutical expenditure.

When you look though at approval figures for new clinical trials, a more positive picture emerges. So far 2024 has seen a total of 475 applications for new clinical trials submitted. 285 of those have already been approved; the others are currently being assessed. 2023 saw a total of 298 applications submitted. Of those, only 154 were approved. In other words, everything would seem to indicate that by the end of 2024 more than double the number of clinical trials will have been approved.

However, the number of approvals does not fully reflect reality, since we do not know whether those trials will start on time, how many patients will be enrolled and, of course, whether those trials will be completed based on the sponsor’s initial design.

Recently the Joint Ministerial Decision relating to the creation and staffing of stand-alone clinical trial departments in hospitals was issued. It came many months late. It had been expected to be issued at the start of the year… It remains to be seen, of course, whether and how quickly it will be implemented, which is the most important thing.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health is examining new arrangements in an attempt to update the statutory framework relating to the running and financial management of clinical trials in Greece. To this end it is promoting:

  • Simpler and more rational procedures for signing contracts and for financially managing clinical trials, non-interventional studies and clinical research using medical devices.
  • Harmonization with the new EU Regulation which lays down the conditions under which clinical trials are conducted.
  • Standardizing contracts for each category of clinical trials.

These challenges facing clinical trial sector was discussed at the 13th Clinical Research Conference, a hybrid event held on 3d December 2024— at the Divani Caravel Hotel. The conference was being organized by ethosEVENTS in partnership with the health information website www.virus.com.gr and health policy magazine Pharma & Health Business Magazine.
