"Uncertainty about Greeks' access to Innovation"

Uncertainty prevails in the healthcare sector regarding Greek patients’ access to new innovative treatments and technologies. The exorbitant rebates in the pharmaceutical market create obstacles to the arrival of new innovative drugs, and the lack of an evaluation mechanism undermines the entry of new medical technology products into EOPYY and the NHS.

At the same time, the virtualization of health services is progressing rapidly, creating expectations for patients and businesses. However, the issuance of a new regulatory framework for the secondary use of health data is still pending, and it has been announced to be presented in the near future.

Furthermore, the establishment of the so-called Innovation Fund (or Transitional Compensation Scheme) has been announced with the aim of providing patients with faster access to innovative therapies (ATMPs, PRIME).

Its operation is expected within the first half of 2026 with initial funding of 50 million euros. The issuance of the relevant regulatory framework is pending, and from what has been made known, a special committee will be established at EOPYY and will reimburse medications for 24-30 months, evaluating their clinical effectiveness.

In the meantime, there is great interest in the possibility of producing innovative gene therapies (CAR-T) by the hospitals themselves. These treatments currently concern severe hematological malignancies, but in the coming years, they will also be extended to other diseases.

Toward this direction, the Ministry of Health is promoting a new institutional framework called Hospital Exemption, with the aim of reducing the cost of treatments to ensure access for a larger number of patients.

Significant progress has been made in recent years in the field of disease prevention and early diagnosis thanks to the development of new, advanced genetic tests and markers. Everything indicates that, thanks to the development of Artificial Intelligence and the reduction in the cost of DNA analysis, in the coming years, doctors will have new tools for predicting diseases such as cancer at their disposal.

All the exciting developments will be discussed at #hico26 – Health Innovation Conference 2026, which will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, organized by ethosEVENTS in collaboration with the magazine Pharma & Health Business and the portal virus.com.gr.
