
"Is the NHS changing?"
“The NHS is changing,” the government passionately claims. Indeed, thanks to the Recovery Fund, critical parts of almost all hospitals and health centers are being renovated, and a significant portion of their medical equipment will be renewed.
At the same time, significant modernization initiatives are being implemented:
- “Bracelet” in the Emergency Department: It is used to record delays, with the aim of reducing waiting time.
- Home Medications: Since June, EOPYY has been distributing high-cost medications to up to 120,000 beneficiaries.
- Evaluation of the National Health System by Patients: Since mid-July, those discharged from public hospitals have been receiving SMS messages to evaluate the services.
- Line 1566: New telephone service for information and appointments with EOPYY doctors and Health Centers. It will soon include information on TOMY, pharmacies on duty, vaccinations, etc.
- Hospital Digitization: Through the MyHealth app, citizens have access to their personal health record.
- Prescription checks: Two circuits were identified, highlighting the need for filters and stricter controls.
It is clear that the government is attempting to improve areas of the healthcare system that are accumulating dissatisfaction, while simultaneously acquiring valuable data on the functioning of the services in order to take measures by allocating available resources more efficiently.
As of January 1, 2025, the new DRG reimbursement system will be implemented in all hospitals. Despite the initial difficulties and the exclusion of payroll, this is a significant step towards a more efficient and targeted healthcare system.
On the other hand, however, structural weaknesses remain. Administratively and organizationally, the NHS remains the same. With the same outdated rules: lack of transparency in procurement, lack of evaluation, a flat salary scale, etc. At a time when all studies by Greek and foreign experts have shown that the National Health System needs a fundamental administrative reorganization, utilizing modern hospital management tools.
In the pharmaceutical sector, the situation remains tight, although the continuous increase in mandatory discounts and rebates has been halted thanks to the implementation of certain targeted measures. However, at the heart of the problem, the implementation of additional prescription control measures remains the desired outcome. The essence is that for the first time in years, Greek patients are facing problems accessing new treatments.
All developments in the National Health System will be discussed at the 16th Pharma & Health Conference, which will take place on October 9th at the Divani Caravel Hotel. The conference is organized by ethosEVENTS, in collaboration with the health news website virus.com.gr and the health policy magazine Pharma & Health Business Magazine.
