"Medical Technology in the post-pandemic world"
After 12 years, Greece exited the enhanced surveillance framework and reached high growth rates, however, the medical technology products’ market is still facing chronic problems and distortions. While just before the pandemic payments in public hospitals had started being processed faster, now they are concluded after 10 to 12 months. In military hospitals the situation is even worse, as it takes more than 2 years for invoices to be paid!
In the meantime, despite announcements regarding the centralization of NHS procurements, very few steps have been taken. In state hospitals about 90% of medical technology products are still being procured without the conduction of a public tender, in violation of the legal provisions in force. New legislation is needed to enforce payment of suppliers. But the sector’s most critical problem is no other than the clawback measure, which is still being applied by the Hellenic Organization of Healthcare Services (EOPPY). According to the corporate sector, it is an unjust measure which hurts entrepreneurship as it doesn’t allow for any predictability.
In addition, the medical technology sector bears the burden of the state’s ongoing indirect funding of the profits of third parties (providers), in some cases to the detriment of companies of the sector. Finally, the real needs of the patients are not taken into consideration and there is no plan regarding the use of new and innovative technologies, as was proven recently by the developments related to diabetes.
At the same time, on a European level, the application of the MDR regulation leads to huge delays in the certification of medical technology products. The situation was exacerbated by the multiple restrictions imposed due to the pandemic, which disturbed supply chains and caused further difficulties in the conduction of on-site inspections and clinical trials.
All the latest developments in the medical technology market had been analyzed in the 8th MedTech Conference , titled: “Medical technology in the post-pandemic world”. The conference was organized by ethosEVENTS, virus.com.gr portal on health and pharmaceutical policies and Pharma & Health Business magazine. The participation in the conference, was physical at Divani Caravel hotel, and digital through LiveOn, the integrated platform for Digital Communication and Events, and its innovative 3D exposition and conference center LiveOn Expo Complex.
