"Greece’s NHS is changing, but problems still persist"

Despite the government’s announcements that the Greek NHS is changing, there continue to be protracted problems in the medical devices market. Hospital debts are declining but at a slow pace, amounts are still left uninvoiced and items continue to be procured without the use of tender procedures. As if that were not enough, the government suddenly passed a provision which imposed a mandatory 7% discount on medical device supplies. Only at the very last moment was it decided not to apply it retroactively from 1.1.2024 onwards; that would have caused severe headaches for many SMEs.

On 31.7.2024 hospital debts stood at € 1.18 billion compared to € 1.319 billion at the end of 2023. The government argues that this figure will drop rapidly by the end of this year since the clawback will be applied soon; this is unlike previous years when delays were more than a year!

It also appears to be making concerted efforts to monitor implementation of hospital budgets. The leadership of the Ministry of Health claims that this year an additional € 481 million was approved and that in the first 8 months of 2024 there was no deviation in expenditure.

The medical devices sector is a key pillar of Greece’s wider health sector. It is a dynamic, innovative sector, with many SMEs and skilled personnel, which can make a significant contribution to health transformation and play a leading role in development and growth. Importers dominate the domestic market, and many of them operate either as representatives of multinational groups or as subsidiaries thereof; unfortunately, there is only a very limited number of production companies.

All developments in the medical devices sector will be discussed at the 10th MedTech Conference #mtco held on 8 November 2024 by ethosEVENTS in cooperation with the Pharma & Health Business magazine & the virus.com.gr portal. It was possible to attend the conference either in person at the Divani Caravel or online through the LiveOn Expo Complex, LiveOn’s innovative 3D exhibition and conference center, the Digital Platform for Business Communication and Events.
