4th Occupational Retirement Provision Forum

"The future of Occupational Insurance is at a crossroads: The necessity for immediate reforms to boost 2nd pillar growth"

Τhe Hellenic Union of Institutions for Occupational Retirement Provision (HUIORP) and ethosEVENTS, in partnership with the banks.com.gr financial and business portal, InsuranceWorld insurance magazine and the insuranceworld.gr portal, are organizing the 4th Occupational Retirement Provision Forum, which will be held on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 February 2023, in person, at the Athenaeum InterContinental hotel, 89-93 Siggrou Ave. The Forum will be simultaneously streamed online via the LiveOn Expo Complex, LiveOn’s innovative 3D exhibition and conference center, a digital platform for Business Communication and Events.

Objective of the Forum

The Forum titled: “The future of Occupational Insurance is at a crossroads: The necessity for immediate reforms to boost 2nd pillar growth” will review the past year’s developments in occupational insurance and the pension-insurance system in general on a domestic and international level.

Distinguished speakers from Greece and abroad will deliver empirical analyses and detailed presentations, providing comprehensive and in-depth information to participants on the issues that are currently of concern, and those expected to become of concern in the immediate future, to the 2nd pillar of insurance on a domestic and European level. The ultimate goal of the Forum is to create a holistic approach towards the operating philosophy and the role of Occupational Insurance Funds as supplementary pension schemes, and to appropriately communicate it to all stakeholders and parties potentially involved in the occupational insurance sector.

Forum Participants

Executives, high-ranking -Greek and foreign- officials, esteemed guests and institutional organizations’ representatives will participate in the 4th Occupational Retirement Provision Forum, with the most distinguished honorary presence being that of the Chairperson of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (E.I.O.P.A.), Ms. Petra Hielkema, as the Forum’s Keynote Speaker.

  • Panel Ι: “Discussion of political parties’ manifesto positions on developing occupational insurance from the day after the parliamentary elections”

The purpose of this panel is the participation of authorized representatives of our political system in the labor and social insurance sectors, in order to present and analyze the campaign manifestos of their political parties, with regard to the development and operation of the institution of occupational insurance, as well as generally ensuring the sustainability of our insurance system through the strengthening of funded savings schemes.

  • Panel ΙΙ: “Incentives for companies to participate in the 2nd pillar of insurance. What causative factors prompt employers to set up and run an occupational fund for the benefit of their workforce”

The purpose of the panel is the participation of top executives from leading financial and credit sector employers who are actively participating in the 2nd pillar of insurance, by setting up and running an Occupational Insurance Fund for the benefit of their workforce, in order for them to go over their experience and analyze in detail the incentives and advantages that the institution of occupational insurance provides to social partners, and, specifically, to the labor market’s employer end of the spectrum.

  • Panel ΙΙΙ: “Investments by occupational funds in a turbulent investment environment. Challenges, opportunities and best management strategies”

The purpose of the panel is the participation of senior management executives from the Greek investment management market, who will go over their experience with regard to investment policy and the results of the investment management of occupational fund capital reserves. In this framework there will be an analysis of the role of Occupational Insurance Funds as long-term institutional investors in the production of capital gains and in the enlargement of capital reserves to the benefit of workers-insured members of occupational funds, as well as of the national economy. At the same time, leading investment market executives are expected to go over their forecasts for the future prospects of the money, capital, and real estate markets, while they will also refer to the experience and necessity of readapting investment strategies based on current challenges.

  • Panel ΙV: “Developments in the European statutory framework for occupational insurance – Empirical analysis from the perspective of supervisory authorities”

The purpose of the panel is for distinguished speakers from abroad and representatives of the international occupational insurance market, specifically, European occupational agencies and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority – E.I.O.P.A., to present gained experience from the operation of the 2nd insurance pillar within EU Member States, as well as international practices and upcoming developments in the sector of instituting and implementing primary and secondary case-law on occupational insurance.

  • Panel V: “Incentives for employee participation in an Occupational Pension Fund, whether individually or collectively, with or without the employer’s assistance”

The purpose of the panel is the participation of executive leaders of workforce representatives from professional unions and associations, who are actively participating in the 2nd pillar and operating Occupational Insurance Funds that are established autonomously by them or their employer companies, to the benefit of their workforce. Participants in this panel are expected to analyze in depth the multiple short-term and long-term benefits that employees can gain from participating in occupational insurance funds, as effective optional vehicles for supplemental pension savings and other insurance coverage.

  • Panel VΙ: Occupational Pension Funds & Supplementary Health Insurance. A viable solution to the national problem of private financing of healthcare expenditure. Economic policy proposals for the framework concerning health benefits”

The purpose of this panel is for the distinguished high-ranking speakers to highlight the experience of operating occupational funds as vehicles for the provision of comprehensive supplemental primary and secondary healthcare programs to their insured members, as well as to underline and face the long-standing national problem of Greek households paying increased annual health expenditures from their family budgets to obtain private health services. In this framework, one of the panel’s important aims is to also discuss the best economic policy solutions for mitigating the problem of high private health expenditures.
